A quick guide to using the Vault.
How the media library is wired
The Vault doesn't host video files. Movies live on our family QNAP NAS and are served frommedia.familyfilmvault.com. The website stores the URL for each movie's video and poster image, then plays the video inline using your browser's built-in HTML5 player.
- On the QNAP: place each home movie under a web-served folder (for example
/share/Web/videos) and a matching poster image under/share/Web/posters. - Reverse proxy: publish those folders behind the
media.familyfilmvault.comsubdomain with HTTPS, so URLs likehttps://media.familyfilmvault.com/videos/christmas-1998.mp4
are reachable from any approved family member's browser. - Add it to the Vault: go to Admin → Add a movie, fill in title, slug, description, year, collection, and people, then paste the video URL and the poster URL.
FAQ
How do I get access?
Request access from the home page. An admin (a parent or grandparent) will approve you. You'll get in as soon as that's done.
Where are the videos stored?
Videos live on our family QNAP NAS and are served from a private subdomain (media.familyfilmvault.com). The Vault just plays them — no uploads, no third-party services.
How does playback work?
Each movie page uses a built-in HTML5 video player. The video file streams directly from the family media server to your browser.
Can I download a movie?
Some movies allow downloads, decided per-clip by an admin. If you see a Download button on the movie page, it's available.
Can I add notes?
Yes — every movie page has a Family Notes section. Leave a memory; it's saved for everyone.
