A quick guide to using the Vault.
Connecting your QNAP + Plex
The Vault doesn't store video files — it links to your Plex Media Server running on the QNAP. Each movie embeds the Plex web player, with a fallback "Open in Plex" button.
- On the QNAP: install Plex Media Server from the App Center, point a library at the folder with your home movies (e.g.
/share/HomeMovies), and let it scan. - Enable Remote Access: in Plex → Settings → Remote Access, turn it on. Plex will provision a
*.plex.directhostname with a valid TLS cert so family can watch from anywhere. - Sign in once: each family member signs in to app.plex.tv with a Plex account you've shared the library with (Plex → Settings → Users & Sharing → Invite Friend).
- Get a movie link: in Plex web, open the movie → click the ⋯ menu → Share (or copy the URL from the address bar). It looks like:
https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/server/<id>/details?key=/library/metadata/<n> - Add it to the Vault: go to Admin → Add a memory, paste the link into Video URL, fill in title / year / people, and save. The movie page will embed the Plex player, with an "Open in Plex ↗" button as a fallback (some browsers block embedding Plex in an iframe).
Prefer a direct stream that plays inline (no Plex UI)? Use a *.plex.direct URL ending in .mp4 with an X-Plex-Token query param — the Vault's player will play it natively.
FAQ
How do I get access?
Request access from the home page. An admin (likely a parent or grandparent) will approve you. You'll get in as soon as that's done.
Where are the videos stored?
We don't host large video files in the app. Each movie links to a private media server, QNAP, Jellyfin/Plex, or other secure storage chosen by the family.
Can I download a movie?
Some movies allow downloads, decided per-clip by an admin. If you see a Download button on the movie page, it's available.
Can I add notes?
Yes — every movie page has a Family Notes section. Leave a memory; it's saved for everyone.
I'm tagged in something I shouldn't be / want removed.
Ask an admin to edit the tags or remove the clip. We respect every family member.
